How attractive am I? What this test actually measures

Most “how attractive am I” quizzes either ask you to rate yourself or return a number with no reason behind it. This attractiveness test measures your face instead. It places 478 points on your face and turns them into eight measurements that people, artists and researchers have linked with facial balance for a long time:

Measurement What it is Range scored as balanced
Symmetry How closely 14 pairs of left and right points mirror each other Higher is better
Facial thirds Brow to nose base, over nose base to chin 0.87–0.95
Face proportion Upper forehead to chin, over cheekbone width 1.17–1.23
Eye spacing Gap between the inner eye corners, in eye widths 1.21–1.29
Canthal tilt Angle from the inner to the outer eye corner +1.5° to +5.5°
Jaw angle Angle at the corner of the jaw 128°–134°
Lip balance Lower lip height over upper lip height 1.45–1.65
Nose width Nose width over the space between the eyes 1.24–1.32

Where do the ranges come from? Studies since the 1990s keep finding that faces close to the population average, and more symmetric faces, are rated as more attractive. So the ranges are centred on the average of 33 AI-generated adult faces (no real people), measured with exactly the same code, rather than on textbook ratios like the golden ratio that a face mesh cannot measure reliably. Outside a range, marks fall off gradually.

Symmetry carries the most weight (22%), then facial thirds and jaw angle. Most faces land between 5 and 8, the middle is about 6.5, and a 9 is rare. The score never goes below 3, so it never tells anyone they are a 1. The full formula is on how the score works.

Want one number at a time? The face rating scores each feature out of 10, the canthal tilt test measures each eye in degrees, the face symmetry test gives a symmetry percentage, and the face shape detector tells you if your face is oval, round, square, heart, diamond or oblong.

How to get an accurate face score

  1. Face the camera straight on. Hold the phone at eye level, about an arm’s length away. We turn the face mesh to the front before measuring, but a turned head still hides part of one cheek. Close selfies stretch the nose and shrink the jaw.
  2. Use soft, even light. Face a window. Hard side light hides one half of your face and lowers symmetry.
  3. Relax your face. A neutral expression or a light smile; big smiles change the lower third.
  4. Pull hair off your forehead and jaw and take off glasses, so the model can see the edges of your face.
  5. Try two or three photos. If the scores differ by more than a point, the lighting or angle is the reason, not your face.

Am I pretty? What a number can and cannot tell you

A face score is a fun, specific answer to a vague question. It can tell you that your eyes are well spaced or that your thirds are even. It cannot see your smile, your style, the way you talk, or the fact that most people find familiar, confident and kind faces attractive. Treat a 6 and an 8 the same way: as notes about one photo.
